Their new town was assured success when the Dayton & Michigan Railroad was constructed through it in 1858. Cridersville became a boom town when oil was discovered in Lima in 1885. It soon found itself at the center of the new Lima Oil Field. Within a few years, hundreds of wells were drilled around the village. The Lima region became the “Oil Capital of the World.” Dr. Charles Strausburg owned one of the first automobiles in Cridersville. The Umbaugh brothers opened Cridersville’s first automobile dealership at 220 W. Main St. around 1915. It was a Saxon Motor Car Company dealership.
